Minyoung & Seokyun Engagement

Long story short, Minyoung and I have known each other since our days at Penn State. One day, she ping me on instand messenger and asked me if I could photograph her wedding. I was really excited for her and told her that I’d love to do it.

She picked Georgetown as the engagement shoot location because it’s one of favorite places in DC. I was initially worried because it was raining earlier in the day. However, just an hour before our meeting time, the storm system had moved out of the Georgetown area giving plenty of sun light (probably too much) for the rest of the shoot.

Sue & Frank – Engagement

This is definitely not just another couple wanting to do a session in Georgetown. Let me tell you about Frank. Frank is avid StarCraft fan. If you don’t know what StarCraft is, it’s an real-time strategy game (learn more at Wikipedia). It’s extremely popular in South Korea. It’s insane to the point where somebody actually died playing it 50 hours straight in 2005. Anyway, Frank isn’t that extreme but he managed to get Sue interested in the game as well. Long story short, Frank proposed to Sue through a well known online third-party StarCraft commentator in a YouTube video of one of the Grand Finals StarCraft matches. This may sound a bit strange to an average person, but for them and many other StarCraft fans out there it was epic!

Esther & James – Engagement

So it’s been quite a while since my last post. December was crazy. Finished my Master’s, flew to Vegas for a week long conference, did a road trip from Vegas to San Francisco via Los Angeles, got rental car broken into, spent hours at SF Northern police station, dealt insurance company, etc…

Anyway, this engagement session was a few days before Thanksgiving. Esther and James flew all the way from California. Although it was pretty sunny, the temperature was around high 40s in the afternoon. I saw Esther shivering on many occasions. We started off near the Capital building, went into National Gallery of Arts, then drove to Lincoln memorial and Georgetown. It was a longer session than usually but I think we all really enjoyed it. Esther was super friendly … not that James wasn’t friendly, he was just quieter.

Cindy and Hua Engagement

Did this engagement shoot back in April. It was a very cold spring day. I was introduced to Cindy and Hua through a good friend. Although they had planned to have their wedding ceremony in China, they wanted to have engagement pictures taken in DC before heading back in May. We did the usual National Mall walk as well as a visit to the National Gallery of Art. At the end of the day, we headed to one of the parks in Springfield, VA. It was a lot more pleasant than the tourist-crowded downtown DC. Anyway, my personal fav is the sunset shot by a lake.

Shin & Brett Engagement

This was the only engagement shoot I did last winter. In fact, it was in January and January was cold as far as I remember. However, on that particular day, the temperature was in the 50s. Shin and Brett were so pumped up they ran around in t-shirts.

Anyway, Shin and Brett are recent University of Maryland grads. According to the couple, they met while training to be RAs (resident assistants). They started dating after a semester of rowdy residents and disappointing diner food. As silly as Brett is, he’s the calm one when Shin freaks out. When he asked her out, she freaked out and he very calmly dealt with it and coaxed her into acquiescing. Same for the proposal. They’re trying to navigate their relationship by melding their very different upbringings and points of views… this leads to lots of anguish and hilarity.

Rose and Danny Engagement

I shot this session last month. Even though it was November, the weather was in the low 70s. It was one of those rare perfect fall days. We started at their home in Merrifield, VA. Then we went to the top floor of the parking garage of the building I work at in Tysons Corner. It was great. There was so much space for them to run around with balloons. Danny’s car became a good prop as well. Overall, it was another fun session. The sunset couldn’t have been more glamorous.

Rose and Danny met each other through a mutual friend. I first met Rose back when I was still at Penn State. She moved down to DC after finishing her master’s. Danny used to live on the east coast, but moved to Seattle to attend University of Washington. He then moved to DC for his MBA at The George Washington University.

Diana and Jorly Engagement – Alexandria, VA

Originally Diana and I scheduled this shoot for the Sunday after Columbus day. However, it rained pretty heavily that day and the week after as well. Finally, we got to do it on the last day of October, which was probably the last weekend of Fall foliage in the DC area. I thought we were pretty lucky as it only rained the morning and right after our two hour afternoon shoot. It was really fun.

Diana and Jorly met through college, reunited after college, dated, engaged! Now they both work in the DC area. In their spare time their love to volunteer, play tennis, beat each other up in Thai boxing, and go bowling.

Arianna + Chris Engagement

I was really looking forward to shooting Arianna and Chris’ engagement session. It was the last Sunday of September and you bet the weather was great. We arranged to meet in Georgetown near Waterfront Starbucks. Arianna and Chris are stunning together. They met in college and now live and work in the DC metro area. We basically took a walk along the Waterfront park, strolled around the lower part of the Georgetown neighborhood and crossed the canal before reaching M street. Georgetown was incredibly crowded, but after all, we had a lot of fun.

Sumi & Allen Engagement

Sumi and Allen are a very sweet SoCal couple. Sumi was working in DC at that time. Allen flew in for a conference and they decided to have a pre-wedding lifestyle/engagement session here. The shoot was back in April and it was the hottest day in spring. Despite the fact that the temperature actually reached the high 90s, everybody was so excited and pumped up. In the morning we strolled around Georgetown, checking out small streets and colorful row houses. We then headed to Mandarin Oriental Hotel Washington DC for some indoor shots. Later in the afternoon we wandered from the Capital to Lincoln Memorial before calling it a day.
